We meticulously planned out all the details of our three-month trip to Europe. The research on what to pack was poured over. We decided that we only wanted to take one luggage to make our lives easier. The day of the trip, we checked in our luggage with clear minds and boarded the plane! About eleven hours later, we found out that the luggage was lost! Learn from our lessons and see how our lost luggage can help you pack better.
The Reality of Lost Luggage
Mid-way through my tour of Europe, I’m fine. I don’t want my luggage back. Why? Because even though we only packed one bag for four people for 90 days, I think we still over packed! Every time we transfer between cities, it is a lot of effort. We have two kids, a stroller, a car seat and three backpacks. Which is a lot, especially with stairs and sometimes no elevators. Since they have lost our luggage, we have also needed to add a booster seat (we originally had this portable one, which would be really nice to have) and a 24-inch spinner luggage. This set up is actually working for us and manages to just hold enough but can even still be a lot on those transfer days.

So no, I don’t want my 50-pound luggage back. You should take my packing advice below and benefit from the hard lesson I learned of how lost luggage can help you pack better!
Lessons on How Lost Luggage Can Help You Pack Better
I would love to offer some great tips to get around the airline losing your luggage. Really this is the first time it has happened to me, but the reality is that this seems to happen more and more frequently. So, let us help you plan ahead by following the below tips!
1. Always Pack Essentials in Your Carry-On
One of the most crucial lessons lost luggage teaches us is the importance of packing essentials in a carry-on. Travelers who only rely on checked baggage risk being left without necessities if their bags go missing. To avoid this, we always keep these items with us in a carry-on:
- Important documents – Passport, visas, boarding passes, and copies of travel insurance.
- Medications – If you take prescription medicine, never place it in checked baggage.
- A change of clothes – Pack at least one extra outfit to manage without your suitcase (thankfully, we had!).
- Toiletries – Travel-sized toothpaste, deodorant, and basic skincare items are helpful.
- Valuables – Electronics, jewelry, and anything irreplaceable should always be in your personal bag. Airlines do have maximum amounts they will pay on lost luggage regardless of how valuable the items were inside of it!
By prioritizing essentials in your carry-on, you ensure that even if your luggage is lost, you can comfortably get through the next few days.
2. Pack Versatile Clothing for Easy Mix-and-Match
A lost bag forces travelers to make do with limited clothing. This highlights the importance of packing smart. Instead of overpacking, adopt a capsule wardrobe approach by selecting neutral, versatile pieces that mix and match easily.
- Stick to a color-coordinated theme so every piece complements others.
- Choose multi-functional clothing, like a scarf that doubles as a blanket or a dress that can be dressed up or down.
- Lightweight, wrinkle-free fabrics reduce the need for ironing and save space.
By planning a versatile wardrobe, you will find that you can travel light without sacrificing style or comfort. Even better, pack a little extra light and pick up some new clothing in your destination! This makes a fantastic souvenir, and I love remembering our trip every time I wear the outfits that we had to buy!
3. Use Compression Bags to Stay Organized and Save Space
When luggage is misplaced, travelers often struggle to recall exactly what was in their bags. Using compression packing bags can make it easier to stay organized and keep track of your belongings.
- Use different bags for different planned outfits or specific weather days.
- Keep a list of what’s inside each bag in your phone. Even if that just means taking a picture right before you pack it.
- Separate bags for clothes mean you can easily move to your carry-on if necessary.
Compression packing cubes also help avoid the chaos of rummaging through your bag if you need to repack quickly or transfer items between bags. It is also great to use to separate clean and dirty clothes as you are traveling too!
4. Minimize Packing to Reduce Dependence on Checked Luggage
Losing your luggage forces you to rethink what you truly need. Many travelers realize that they can travel with less and still be comfortable. I am convinced that I will probably not check a bag again and save myself those hefty luggage fees! Here are some ways to downsize effectively:
- Follow the one-week rule – pack enough for seven days, even for longer trips. You can always do laundry or use laundry service at a hotel.
- Use travel-sized toiletries instead of full-sized bottles.
- Wear bulky items (like jackets and boots) instead of packing them.
- Opt for multi-purpose gear, such as a jacket with hidden pockets for extra storage.
By keeping your luggage minimal, you reduce the risk of losing essential items and make travel more manageable.
5. Make Your Bag Easily Identifiable
A common reason for luggage being lost is mistaken identity—someone else picks up your bag, assuming it’s theirs. To prevent this:
- Use a bright luggage tag or a unique luggage cover.
- Avoid generic black suitcases, which are the most common at baggage claims.
- Attach a distinctive ribbon, sticker, or strap to make your bag stand out.
- Include a name tag inside your bag with your contact details in case the outer tag is lost.
Making your suitcase visually unique reduces the chances of someone else mistakenly grabbing it and helps airline staff quickly identify it if it goes missing.
6. Use Smart Tracking Technology
Technology has made it easier to track lost luggage. Investing in a luggage tracker, such as an Apple AirTag or Tile, allows you to monitor your bag’s location in real time. Benefits of luggage trackers include:
- Immediate location tracking via smartphone apps.
- Peace of mind knowing you can check your bag’s whereabouts at any time.
- Quick recovery—if your bag is misplaced, you can provide airline staff with its exact location.
Using tracking technology enhances security and ensures a smoother experience if your luggage is delayed. However, we struggled with customer service when our luggage was lost. For the majority of the time, they knew where our luggage was. It was just hard to keep up with our travel activities and more work than we needed trying to arrange with the airline. In the end, we just had the airline send the luggage to our home airport for us to pick up.
7. Keep a Digital Inventory of Your Bag’s Contents
One of the most frustrating aspects of lost luggage is remembering exactly what was inside. To ease this, create a digital inventory before your trip:
- Take photos of your packed suitcase before closing it.
- Make a list of valuable or essential items and save it on your phone.
- Keep receipts for expensive items in case you need to file a claim.
This will make it easier to report lost items and claim compensation from airlines or travel insurance providers.

By implementing these strategies—keeping essentials in your carry-on, using smart packing techniques, and minimizing what you bring—you can significantly reduce the impact of misplaced luggage.
